Cop who shot wife and self dies

The Metro police officer who shot his wife before turning the gun on himself has died.

Eugene Gilfellow, 30, was on life support after he shot his wife, Michelle,32, and himself in the head during an argument on Sunday afternoon.

Police found the couple in their main bedroom where it is believed he used his service pistol.

Michelle worked at Nyanga police station and is still clinging on for dear life.

On Tuesday police confirmed Eugene died on Monday afternoon after his life-support machines were turned off.

While the exact details of the incident are still sketchy a source close to the family says the couple were going through a divorce and Michelle had moved out of the house a few weeks earlier.

The woman, who was one of the first people at the scene on Sunday afternoon says Michelle and Eugene were “a happy couple”.

“They have been living in the area just over a year and they were a very happy couple,” she tells the Daily Voice.

“It was very surprising when she suddenly moved out.”

She says on Sunday Michelle arrived at the house with her sister to take her two sons to the beach with them.

“The boys lived with their father,” she explains.

It was during this time that an argument started between them about the children and where they were going to stay.

“They [children] were still inside the house when two shots were fired,” she says.

“The children then ran out of the house into the street and told [a neighbour] their daddy shot their mommy.”

The woman says Michelle told a friend they were getting divorced.

A memorial service will be held for Eugene at Philippi headquarters on Wednesday. - Daily Voice

  1. COP SHOOTS WIFE TWICE IN EACH THIGH
    2011-12-15 14:42

Johannesburg - A Sannieshof police officer shot his wife while their 8-year-old daughter was in the house, then turned the gun on himself in the early hours of Thursday morning, North West police said.

"A 38-year-old constable allegedly shot his wife twice in each thigh after an argument, using his service pistol," Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said in a statement.

"I am not sure where the daughter was, but she could have witnessed her father shooting her mother."

The 36-year-old woman fled through the bedroom window with the child to look for help.

"A shot was heard and the constable was found with a single bullet wound to the head," Ngubane said.

The man was certified dead on the scene and his wife was admitted to hospital for medical treatment.

An inquest and attempted murder docket were opened.

    2011-12-22 08:55

Durban - A police officer shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself outside a shopping mall in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, it was reported on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid told the Citizen newspaper the officer shot his wife as she was sitting in a car outside the Oribi Plaza mall on Wednesday morning.

He fired two shots at her through the window of the car, hitting her in the head. He then placed the gun under his chin and shot himself.

Wiid said police were investigating the officer's motives. The couple had been married for a month at the time of shooting.
