Police Detective Corporal Wayne Llewellyn committed domestic quadruple murder-suicide

Jamaica

Relatives of Joan Llewellyn, the estranged wife of the policeman who murdered four of her relatives, including her only child, said the cop was an evil and abusive person behind closed doors... Joan, who had reportedly had enough of an abusive relationship, moved back to her parents' house, along with her daughter, nearly two months ago. She was in the process of filing for a divorce... The relatives said although Llewellyn displayed a quiet and humble persona in public and among his colleagues in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, behind closed doors he was a domineering, devious and abusive man... "My auntie was just always afraid." Llewellyn's abuse also had a serious psychological effect on his teenage stepdaughter, who became very depressed and began cutting herself. [Excerpts] Shock, anger, grief, and disbelief gripped the usually quiet community of Three Hills in Western St Mary yesterday after a policeman shot dead four members of his wife's family before turning the gun on himself. Corporal Wayne Llewellyn reportedly killed his stepdaughter, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and his brother-in-law before he ended his own life outside his sister-in-law's house metres away... His victims have been identified as 16-year-old Jorihan Flynn, Rachel Brown and her 72-year-old husband Vodley and their son John Townsend, 55. Llewellyn's 40-year-old wife of 13 years was admitted to hospital with a bullet wound to the neck. Crime chief for the parish, Deputy Superintendent Gladstone Ellis said yesterday that preliminary investigations revealed that the quadruple murder and suicide seem to have resulted from a domestic dispute. Relatives told the Observer that Llewellyn and his wife were having marital problems and that the two separated about two months ago, prompting his wife to return to her parents' home in St Mary with her daughter last month... One of Mrs Brown's church sisters, Deloney Hilton, recalled a conversation she had with her on Tuesday in which she expressed fear for her life. According to Hilton, the elderly woman had called her and told her that her son-in-law (Llewellyn) had threatened to kill the family. Llewellyn had reportedly blamed his wife's family for the problems he was having with her... After the horrifying crime, residents said Llewellyn went to his sister-in-law's house several metres away and tried to persuade her to let him in. When she refused, he reportedly turned the gun on himself. [Full article here]

[Excerpts] SEVENTY-NINE-year-old Rachel Brown had become fearful her son-in-law Wayne Llewellyn could kill her and members of her family. Wednesday evening Brown reportedly telephoned one of her church sisters to say she felt the angel of death was near. "About 4, she called me and said, 'Dem threaten wi enuh. Wah mi ago do Sister Hylton?' I said to her, 'Don't stay there. Go and report it at the (police) station and don't sleep there'," a member of the Retreat Seventh-day Adventist Church told The Gleaner. According to the church sister, the elderly Mrs Brown was defiant. "She said she is not going to leave the house. She said she was going to take it to the Lord in prayer," the church sister added. Llewellyn, a detective corporal who has sworn to protect and serve, had gone to the edge after Joan, his wife of 13 years, walked out on him. The couple, along with Joan's 16-year-old daughter Jorjhan Flynn, had moved from Ocho Rios, St Ann, to Manchester where Llewellyn had been transferred. But Joan, who had reportedly had enough of an abusive relationship, moved back to her parents' house, along with her daughter, nearly two months ago. She was in the process of filing for a divorce... [Excerpts] Fearing that his younger brother's murderous rampage in the quiet community of Three Hills, St Mary, last Thursday has driven a wedge between two closely knit families, Simeon Llewellyn reached out to his in-laws yesterday in a heart-rending attempt to start the healing process. "We wish we could console them (relatives of the Brown family) in some way," offered Simeon, who acted as the spokesman for some members of the Llewellyn family in their first public comments since the shocking multiple murder-suicide. "We still consider ourselves to be your friend. We are really hoping that you can find some solace in the fact that it is not us against you, it was just something that happened at the spur of the moment and we don't know what we could have done to prevent it"... KILLER COP WAS A MONSTER, SAY IN-LAWS?
Jamaica Observer

[Excerpts] Relatives of Joan Llewellyn, the estranged wife of the policeman who murdered four of her relatives, including her only child, said the cop was an evil and abusive person behind closed doors... His wife of 13 years, who was shot in the neck, remains in hospital in serious condition. Her relatives said the bullet is still lodged inside her body and that while she is communicating, she cannot move. The relatives said although Llewellyn displayed a quiet and humble persona in public and among his colleagues in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, behind closed doors he was a domineering, devious and abusive man. One of Mrs Llewellyn nieces, Shannon Miller, who spoke with the Sunday Observer, lived with her grandparents, but was not at home at the time of the cop's bloody rampage... Miller, who said she had a very close relationship with her aunt and cousin, said Llewellyn was extremely controlling and treated the two like prisoners, keeping them away from their family. "He likes to control everything, one of the biggest problem was that our family is very tight knit, we are a family who likes to be together and we deal with things together and he (Llewellyn) didn't like that," Miller added. "He took them away from us. My auntie couldn't visit as she liked and we couldn't go visit her as we like, and Jay Jay didn't take that very well and neither did my aunt." Llewellyn's murderous actions shocked many including his colleagues within the Area II police division where he worked for several years before he was transferred to Area III... Miller said Llewellyn fooled many but she noted that his smile never reached his eyes. She said his behaviour always puzzled her mom Valrie, one of Joan's sisters, who encouraged her on many occasions to leave the marriage. She said Llewellyn would verbally abuse his wife and her daughter if they disobeyed his orders and visited her family... "My auntie was just always afraid." Llewellyn's abuse also had a serious psychological effect on his teenage stepdaughter, who became very depressed and began cutting herself. She said Jay Jay reportedly used an instrument to carve the word 'STORM' into her arm... " Jay Jay was such a bright little girl, she was active in school, she was very outgoing, she was helpful, lovable. She was such a sweet little girl, she was a leader, but Wayne took all that from us."... [Full article here]
