A corrections officer arrested nearly a month ago for felony battery on his pregnant wife resigned Tuesday following an Internal Affairs investigation. Anthony Votta, 31, who had been with the agency since June 2003, was investigated for violation of the agency's code of conduct. The internal report stated it was not the first time deputies had responded to Votta's home, and not the only time Votta had brushes with the law... In February, Votta was the subject of a child abuse case where it was alleged he spanked his then 8-year-old daughter and her injuries were reported... Officials declined to prosecute Votta, provided he enroll in anger management and parenting classes. On July 20, deputies responded to Votta's home. A deputy on scene later told Leo Smith Jr., head of the agency's Internal Affairs Unit, that Votta and his wife had exchanged words... When [Votta's wife] tried calling her mother, she said, Votta kicked the door open, grabbed her right upper arm and struggled with her... twisted her left wrist until the phone was released, and threw the phone against the wall... "The facts of the internal investigation made it clear that Mr. Votta had crossed the line," stated Tom Wilder, Sheriff's Office chief of staff, in a news release. Criminal charges are pending against Votta. [Full article here]
