A Forsyth County sheriff's deputy was arrested early Tuesday on a charge of hitting his wife. Deputy Roosevelt Mason Kellum, 40, faces one count of assault on a female stemming from an argument Monday night, said Lt. David Perry of the Winston-Salem Police Department. Kellum's wife, Melanie, called police to their home... Kellum is accused of putting his wife in a headlock and punching her repeatedly... A police officer investigated and got a warrant. Kellum then turned himself in at the jail with his attorney... The sheriff's office put Kellum on paid leave Tuesday, Maj. Brad Stanley said, after Kellum was released on a $2,500 bond. USUALLY, SOMEONE ARRESTED ON A DOMESTIC-VIOLENCE CHARGE WOULD STAY IN JAIL OVERNIGHT, THEN APPEAR BEFORE A DISTRICT COURT JUDGE. A judge can have a hearing earlier and change a bond. Judge Denise Hartsfield, who changed the bond, said she routinely does so when asked by attorneys on weekends. That's what Evans did, she said. Maj. Brad Stanley, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said that the sheriff's office is doing an internal investigation into the incident. [Full article here]

Two Forsyth County sheriff's deputies recently accused of misconduct in separate incidents are no longer with the sheriff's office, a spokesman said yesterday. One, Tyrone Davis, 28, is under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation after being accused of sexual misconduct at the jai... The other, Roosevelt Mason Kellum, 40, was no longer with the sheriff's office as of Tuesday, [Maj. Brad] Stanley said. He also would not say whether Kellum was fired. A phone message left for Kellum's attorney, Frederick Evans, was not returned. A cell phone number for Kellum had been disconnected. Kellum is accused of putting his wife in a headlock and punching her repeatedly on May 26. He faces one count of assault on a female. Kellum was a deputy from 1995 to 2005, then he left the sheriff's office to work in the private sector. He returned to the sheriff's office last July and was a courtroom bailiff. [Full article here]
