“Oh my God don’t let him go.” Chao Lee begged police at least a dozen times to arrest her husband, Chueng Lee, following a crash into a Shawano County bridge on Sept. 18, 2007. Chao’s conversations with a Shawano County Sheriff’s deputy were captured on a squad video camera and the deputy’s microphone and played during the first full day of testimony at trial today. Former Wausau police officer Chueng Lee’s charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide charge. Shawano County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandra Finger spoke with Chao Lee while assessing her injuries and trying to determine what happened. Finger said Chao Lee had a broken arm and a broken leg, which she described was bent into a “Z.” Chueng Lee complained of chest pain, she said. Finger said she turned on her microphone after Chao Lee made the first comment about the crash being intentional. “I can’t believe (unintelligible) he just tired to kill me,” Chao Lee told Finger on the transcribed video. Later Chao Lee said, “I don’t know, he went to Laos he get married and he came back he do this to me.” A Tigerton EMT told jurors that Chueng Lee requested pen and paper and wrote a series of notes after he was put in the ambulance. The notes ranged from answers to medical questions to Lee saying he saw a deer and that Chao grabbed the steering wheel. Lee said he swerved to miss a deer before crashing... More than 20 people sat in the courtroom behind Chueng Lee, who was dressed in a suit and sitting next to Connell. Only a few people sat with or behind Chao Lee, who is using crutches... Ex-cop accepts plea deal
Prosecutor recommends 5-to-8-year prison term

The wife of a Weston man on trial for attempting to kill her in Shawano County is trying to reconcile with him, prosecutors said after a plea deal was reached Tuesday. Former Wausau police officer Chueng Lee, 46, entered no contest pleas Tuesday to two felony charges: recklessly causing great bodily harm to another human and reckless driving causing great bodily harm... He would have faced a prison sentence of up to 80 years if convicted of first-degree attempted homicide, battery and second-degree sexual assault charges... The new charges carry up to a 16-year sentence, including nine years of confinement, but Shawano County District Attorney Gregory Parker said he will cap the time spent in confinement to between five and eight years. Chao Lee was involved in the decision to amend the charges, Parker said. She asked Judge Thomas Grover to drop the no contact order while her husband remains in the Shawano County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond. "She wanted (the order dropped) based on trying to reconcile for the interest of the family," Parker said... As part of the agreement, five felony charges filed in October in Marathon County against Chueng Lee will be dismissed. Parker also was acting as special prosecutor in that case. [Full article here]
